Students don’t always acquire knowledge solely from textbooks and lecturers. Often, especially among students, valuable insights come from experienced practitioners in their field. This philosophy underpins the Film and Television Production Program (PFTV) at the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Indonesian Institute of the Arts, Denpasar (ISI Denpasar), which recently hosted Alffy Rev as a guest lecturer on Wednesday, October 4, 2023.

The versatile director, renowned for his work, “Wonderland Indonesia,” delivered a lecture on Film and Television Directing in the PFTV Program Laboratory at ISI Denpasar. The lecture was attended by lecturers and students in 1, 3, and 5 semester in the PFTV Program.

Alffy Rev, whose real name is Awwalur Rizqi Al-firori, shared his journey in the creative industry from 2013 to 2023. He developed a passion for music while in vocational school and later found a new passion for directing, eventually gaining recognition for his outstanding work. He wanted students to see the evolution of his work and personal growth over this period, encouraging them to view themselves as constantly evolving individuals. “From 2013 to 2023, there were many interesting journeys. It’s not about immediately reaching ‘Wonderland Indonesia’; instead, there are crucial stages before ‘Wonderland Indonesia’ came to be,” said the man born on June 18, 1995, in Mojokerto.

He also emphasized that a director must possess a wide range of knowledge. Directors hold the creative vision throughout the production process, from pre-production to final editing. They start with the script and collaborate with screenwriters, and sometimes even write the script themselves. Directors need to oversee every aspect of film or video production. “Directors need to be able to do it all, but it doesn’t mean they have to do it all alone,” added the founder of Dewatlantis Studio.

Rai Budaya Bumiarta, a lecturer in the PFTV Program at ISI Denpasar, who was present during the guest lecture, mentioned that Alffy Rev is one of the rapidly evolving directors in the audiovisual industry today. Besides being a proficient musician, he has directed several music videos. “Alffy Rev created ‘Wonderland Indonesia,’ and this work is aimed at reaching a broader audience,” he said.

Alffy Rev commended the learning ecosystem at ISI Denpasar, supported by adequate facilities. He encouraged students to foster collaboration by developing audio-visual projects beyond campus boundaries. He hoped that many young filmmakers in Bali could thrive in the film industry, thereby diversifying the Indonesian film landscape, which is currently centered in Jakarta. “The filmmaking community can also grow in Bali with more film screenings and frequent film festivals. This will motivate young Balinese filmmakers to continually evolve and innovate,” he concluded at the end of the lecture. (ISIDps/Public Relations)

The Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar recently hosted a distinguished delegation from the National University of Singapore (NUS), led by Associate Professor Irving Chan Johnson with his 12 students from the South East Asian Studies Department. This visit was nothing short of a historic moment for both institutions and was warmly welcomed by ISI Denpasar’s Vice-Rector for Planning and Cooperation, Professor Dr. I Komang Sudirga, S.Sn., M.Hum, in the ISI Denpasar Rectorate Meeting Room on Wednesday, September 27, 2023.

Also present is the Dean of the Faculty of Performing Arts, Dr. I Ketut Garwa, S.Sn., M.Sn, the Dean of the Faculty of Performing Arts, and I Nyoman Kariasa, S.Sn., M.Sn, the Coordinator of the Karawitan Study Program. The primary focus of this gathering was to discuss the draft for the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between the Faculty of Performing Arts at ISI Denpasar and the South East Asian Studies Department at NUS.

Professor Sudirga enthusiastically embraced the prospect of this meaningful MoU with NUS, a venerable institution with a legacy of academic excellence. He enthusiastically outlined the numerous opportunities this collaboration could bring, such as joint research initiatives, seminars, faculty and student exchanges, and various other collaborative ventures that would be mutually beneficial. “NUS stands as a paragon of higher education globally, and this partnership promises an array of advantages for us,” Sudirga elaborated.

Professor Irving, proficient in Indonesian and Balinese, expressed his optimism about the prospective MoU as a conduit for fostering profound cooperation between the two esteemed universities. Following discussions regarding the draft MoU at ISI Denpasar, Professor Irving pledged to submit it for a thorough review by the Head of the Department of Asian Studies at NUS. “Upon receiving approval from our department head, we can officially seal this momentous agreement,” assured the professor. In the spirit of cultural exchange and synergy, students from NUS’s South East Asian Studies Department had the privilege of participating in an engaging Balinese dance workshop. This lively event took place at the I Ketut Reneng Dance Studio in ISI Denpasar. Under the expert guidance of the Dance Study Program Lecturer, I Wayan Sutirtha, S.Sn., M.Sn, students were introduced to the fundamentals of Balinese dance, including movements such as ngumbang, agem, angsel, piles, and ngeseh. The students’ enthusiasm and receptiveness to the intricate dance forms were truly remarkable and indicative of the cultural bonds being forged. (ISIDps/PR)

In implementing the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, lecturers of the Craft Study Program, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, the Indonesian Art Institute, Denpasar, held community service at the Dalem Temple, Serongga Traditional Village, Gianyar, Saturday 11 December 2021. This community service activity was filled with making uparengga kober penwasangan. which will be used at the temple ahead of the piodalan which will take place on the full moon day, December 18, 2021. The administrator of the Kayangan Dalem Temple in the Serongga Traditional Village, Drs. I Kadek Mertanadi, M.Sc. (55 years old) positively welcomed the activity program of the Crafts Department lecturers at ISI Denpasar. Because this activity can help complete the uperengga equipment before the piodalan at the temple.

The chairman of the committee as well as the temple prejuru Drs. I Ketut Astawa Suyasa (63 years old) also thanked the Craft Study Program ISI Denpasar for the implementation of this PKM program. He hopes that this service program will continue in the future. This activity is considered positive because it can help manners and cannot be assessed in terms of material and also as a cultural preservation program for local wisdom.

Dr. Drs. I Wayan Suardana, M.Sn, a representative lecturer of Craft Study Program ISI Denpasar on that occasion explained that this community service activity involved 20 lecturers and was carried out regularly every semester at different places and programs. This Craft Study Program was attended by the Vice Chancellor of ISI Denpasar, Dr. Drs. I Ketut Muka, M.Si. The service of the Craft Study Program at the Dalem Temple in the Serongga Traditional Village is also equipped with the planting of candlenut trees (tingkih) around the temple area. Candlenut fruit is used as a means of ceremony in Hinduism in Bali. During this service, cleaning aids were also delivered.

BALINESE COLORS AS BALI IDENTITY IN MODERN INTERIOR AND ARCHITECTURE

On Saturday (27/11/2021) held in the courtroom of ISI Denpasar rectorate building, the Matching Fund 2021 Research Result Dissemination program entitled ‘Diversification of Balinese Colors for Development of Paint Finishing on Interior and Modern Architecture Design’. Dr. A A. Gede Rai Remawa as the Chief Researcher, consisting of Dr. I Made Pande Artadi, I Kadek Dwi Noorwatha, M.Ds, Toddy Hendrawan Yupardhi, M.Ds and Putu Ari Darmastuti, M.Sn; all of which came from the ISI Denpasar Interior Design Study Program.

The event was attended by invitations from Bali Provincial Culture Service, Bali Provincial Perbekel (Head of the Village) Forum, HDII Bali, practitioners, alumni and students as well as DUDI Partners in this Matching Fund program, namely Ir. I Kadek Sosiawan, M. Arst as director of CV. Racana Design.

It was revealed in the event that Balinese color is the development of Balinese paint or traditional dyes for coloring traditional Balinese art, namely mask (tapel) coloring  made from natural materials. It is dominated by stone and other organic materials, such as: Deluga, Atal, Taum, Pere, Kencu, Mangsi, Bone/Horn. Those materials diversified in a modern way, so that the intensity of the obtained paint finishing color is relevant to modern interior architecture.

The Balinese colors diversification process is carried out by the students at the ISI Denpasar Interior Design Studio as the pioneer of the ISI Denpasar Bali Color Laboratory Research Center. The participants, especially from HDII and practitioners, hope that the results of this research will be disseminated massively and widely in order to strengthen Balinese identity in interior design and modern architecture and also to preserve Balinese visual culture, especially Balinese colors.

Denpasar (ANTARA) – The Indonesian Art Institute (ISI) Denpasar inaugurate two doctorates’ students of art creation, I Wayan Sujana and I Ketut Garwa, both of whom are lecturers on campus.

The two ISI Denpasar lecturers were successively tested by 11 examiners, including from academics outside ISI Denpasar,” said the Rector of ISI Denpasar Prof Dr Wayan Kun Adnyana in Denpasar, Tuesday.

The Art Study Program of the ISI Denpasar Postgraduate Doctoral Program graduated the two doctoral students in an open examination which took place on Monday (15/11) and Tuesday (16/11).

I Wayan Sujana, who is fondly known as Suklu, produced findings on the art practice of MAL (Mobile Art Laboratory): Alternative Space for Community-Based Performing Arts Creative, while Ketut Garwa on the transformation of the Ngrebeg Kuningan tradition in Bangli City in colossal musical compositions.

During open exam, Monday (15/11) Ketut Garwa was tested by Prof. Dr. I Nengah Duija, Prof. Dr. I Komang Sudirga, Dr. I Nyoman Sukerna, Dr. I Gusti Ngurah Seramasara, Dr. I Kadek Suartaya, Dr. I Ketut Suteja, and Dr. Ni. Made Arshiniwati.

Examiners from the promoter element Prof. Dr. I Wayan Dibia, Co-Promoter 1 Prof. Dr. I Wayan Rai S., Co-Promoter 2 Dr. I Gede Yudarta, and the Chief of the Examiner Prof. Dr. Wayan Kun Adnyana—The rector as well as the Head of the Organizing Unit for the Art Study Program of the ISI Doctoral Program Denpasar.

The Rector of ISI Denpasar Wayan Kun Adnyana also as the promoter led an open examination on Tuesday (16/11) for Sujana Suklu, with examiners Prof. Dr. Setiawan Sabana, Dr. Jean Couteau, Prof. Dr. I Nyoman Suarka, Prof. Dr. I Nyoman Sedana, Dr. I Nengah Wirakusuma. , Dr I Ketut Muka, Dr I Ketut Suteja, and Co-Promoter 1 Prof Dr. I Wayan Dibia and Co-Promoter 2 Dr I Wayan Suardana.

During the open exam, Ketut Garwa convincingly responded to all the questions posed by the examiner.

“Ngrebeg Kuningan in Bangli City is transforming into a colossal musical composition, requiring observation, imagination building, then creative practices that manage the talents of Bangli local musicians, until a composition is born that departs from the Pangurip Panca Dewata concept,” said Garwa.

According to Garwa, who is also the Dean of the Faculty of Performing Arts, ISI Denpasar, this work can be a model for transforming ritual traditions into new artistic creativity.

Meanwhile, Prof. Komang Sudirga as the examiner said the work of Ngrebeg Kuningan Colossal Music Composition has the meaning of transforming sacred religious values ​​related to the Ngrebeg rite in Catus Pata as the axis of the world (cosmic axis), the unification of the relationship between the macrocosm and the microcosm.

“The concept of work based on the Pangurip Panca Dewata with odd numbers is not commonly applied in Balinese musical compositions, but through a creative touch, the nuances of musicality flow harmoniously. This innovative creativity can be used as a source of inspiration for young composers in the future,” said Sudirga.

Meanwhile, Sujana Suklu is noted to have practiced the MAL concept 10 times in various locations. Prior to the final exhibition at Komaneka Gallery, Ubud agilely explained the findings of art practice based on interaction, dialogue, and collaboration, including intermingles in MAL, enabling the general public to practice art together.

One of Sujana Suklu’s examiners, Dr Jean Couteau, emphasized that Suklu’s paintings are very personal, but in turn, he consciously builds a communal collaboration space full of possibilities.

“Personal painting does not become an obstacle to build collaborative creative spaces across arts, even with the wider community. This is a sociological path for contemporary art,” said the French anthropologist who has lived in Bali for decades.

The existence of the covid-19 pandemic experienced by Indonesia, caused lecture activities on art campuses, experiencing obstacles, to work on campus, experiencing obstacles. This matter pushed students to work and study from home. Working at home has many obstacles, which are faced by students in expressing their creative ideas, so they start using makeshift media materials.

High enthusiasm to continue in producing works of arts, encouraging students to be more creative and innovate in their creative works. Work diligently and disciplined, so as to produce quality works. The results of the work produced are then collected in the Craft Student Association at ISI Denpasar. Students and lecturers organized exhibitions, to promote the works that have been produced during the covid-19 pandemic.

On Tuesday, October 5, 2021, Kriya Study Program students making a new breakthrough to hold an exhibition at the Denpasar Cultural Park. The number of works exhibited is 100 works, with 9 works of leather, 30 pieces of ceramics, 19 pieces of wood, 11 pieces of masks, and 31 pieces of mixed materials or mixed media. The hundred works were exhibited with the aim of introducing the students’ work while they were at home. Overall, it displays a form of work that has aesthetic value, and is full of creativity and innovation, the work for the most part shows the identity and turmoil of ideas that are in the mind and tries to realize these ideas in a craft art.

This exhibition was opened by the Rector of ISI Denpasar, Prof. Dr. I Wayan Adnyana. SSn., M.Sn. In the spirit of giving appreciation to craft students, to always work with full responsibility, still come up with bright ideas without thinking about the materials and tools used. Crafts are now free to process materials and tools, not still based on certain materials or tools. Everything can be put together creatively and innovatively so as to produce works that are aesthetically pleasing and of high selling value.

Over time, exhibition facilities can be carried out through internet web media with various social media. It’s enough to play with your fingers on a cellphone or laptop, we can sell works very quickly and get a fast response too.

As social media is growing, it is hoped that students must be brave, offering their work through that media, so that creative ideas that have been poured into the form of copyrighted works quickly get appreciation from the wider community, even in a matter of minutes they can reach networks throughout the world.

In the future, it is hoped that all craft students will dare to compete, with entrepreneurs, in the virtual world, to compete in designing virtual exhibitions, both independently and in groups, this is very good to get a quick response from the public. This effort really helps students to become creative young entrepreneurs, to introduce their artistic products to the public.

In addition, students can collaborate with other businesses, without high operational costs and can be reduced. The exhibition process in a virtual way, will provoke creative ideas more quickly, to find superior and competitive copyrighted works.
