Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar synergized with the Cultural Profession Certification Institute (Lembaga Sertifikasi Profesi or LSP) P-2, Directorate General of Culture, Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology held a Cultural Field Certification for lecturers and educational staff of ISI Denpasar, on March 19-20, 2024, at the Citta Kelangen Building, ISI Denpasar.
The Head of the Academic Affairs Bureau, Student Affairs, Planning, and Cooperation of ISI Denpasar and also the Coordinator of the Cultural Field Certification Implementation, Dr. I Komang Arba Wirawan, in his report stated that a total of 80 lecturers and educational staff of ISI Denpasar participated in this professional certification. Participants were divided into 7 competency schemes, namely Art Curator, Sculptor and Ceramist, Composer, Musician, Dancer, Show Judge, and Art Archivist.

Dr. Arba added that ISI Denpasar presented 12 Professional assessors consisting of Professors, Doctors, and Experts in their fields. “Each participant or assessor will be assessed by one assessor according to their competency field,” he said.
The Rector of ISI Denpasar, Prof. Dr. I Wayan ‘Kun’ Adnyana in his speech mentioned that this cultural field certification aims to enhance the professional capacity of lecturers and educational staff of ISI Denpasar. Furthermore, in accordance with Key Performance Indicators (Indikator Kinerja Utama or IKU) 4, professional strengthening requires objective criteria in the form of professional certification. Prof. Kun Adnyana hopes that the ongoing collaboration with LSP P2 Cultural can continue considering that ISI Denpasar has 195 lecturers who need certification. “Hopefully, this good synergy will continue in the future with LSP P2 Cultural to improve the human resources of ISI Denpasar,” he said.

The Chairperson of LSP P-2 Cultural, Dra. Sri Hartini, M.Sc. appreciates ISI Denpasar’s efforts in enhancing the professional capacity of lecturers and educational staff through this professional certification. According to her, certification is the right step to test intermediate competencies so that they can obtain promotions or better career opportunities. “The competency test of LSP P2 Cultural will cover the ability to analyze situations, make decisions, and manage teams or projects. This competency test helps individuals demonstrate that they have higher skills and experience in certain fields,” said the former Secretary of the Directorate General of Culture, Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology. The festival entitled Manawa-Prabawa-Manu (Pulpit of the Noble Generation) was opened by the Rector of ISI Denpasar, Prof. Dr. I Wayan ‘Kun’ Adnyana at Natya Mandala ISI Denpasar, Tuesday, March 19, 2024, evening.
Bali Citta Samasta will be held for 15 days, from March 19 to April 2, 2024. This inaugural alumni art festival presents several programs, namely Lango Wara (Alumni Art Performance), Citta Karaman Adinugraha (Highly Dedicated and Contributing Alumni Awards), Rupa Wara (Visual Art Exhibition), Kanti Wara (Alumni Gathering), Waskita Wara (Art-Design Discussions), Charma Wara (Mural Art Workshop), and Sewaka Wara (Alumni Initiative Space).

Head of the Research Institute, Community Service, and Education Quality Assurance, Dr. Drs. I Wayan Suardana, M.Sn, in his report stated that participants of the Alumni Art Festival are graduates of the years 2019 and 2024. Bali Citta Samasta is held in an effort to strengthen bonds of friendship and serve as a creative space for exchange of ideas and thoughts among alumni. Dr. Suardana added that Bali Citta Samasta provides a good opportunity for ISI Denpasar to conduct tracer studies and satisfaction surveys of ISI Denpasar’s services. This is in support of meeting Key Performance Indicators (KPI) 1.
“Bali Citta Samasta is an important momentum for us to strengthen alumni networks and encourage collaboration among generations. Through this festival, we hope to build closer relationships among alumni, create space for the exchange of ideas and experiences, and give recognition to those who have shown high dedication and contribution to the world of art,” he said.

In the opening of Bali Citta Samasta, the Rector of ISI Denpasar, Prof. Dr. I Wayan ‘Kun’ Adnyana, presented the Citta Karaman Adinugraha Awards to five alumni who have shown high dedication and contribution. They are Composer and Founder of Gamelan Pesel I Wayan Arik Wirawan, S.Sn., M.Sn., Choreographer and Founder of Sanggar Kerta_Art Ni Komang Ayu Ananta Putri, S.Sn, M.Sn., Designer and Sculptor I Komang Gde ‘Kedux’ Sentana Putra, S.Sn., Film Director Herda Martin Dwi Angga, S.Tr.Sn., and Contemporary Artist I Made Muliana ‘Bayak’, S.Sn.

The Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar-Bali held the Bhakti Widya Kahuripan “Cupak Gerantang Anglanglang Dharma” celebration, which took place grandly at Jaba Pura Pasar Agung, Batur Village, Kintamani District, Bangli Regency, on Sunday, March 3, 2024, evening. As part of this event, several lecturers and students from the Fine Arts Program, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, ISI Denpasar, enlivened the event by conducting painting demonstrations in the audience area of Jaba Pura Pasar Agung. The beauty of the surrounding nature, coupled with the grandeur of Pura Pasar Agung Gunung Batur, and the figures of Cupak Gerantang served as the main source of inspiration for the involved artists.

All costumes worn by characters in the dance drama “Cupak Gerantang Anglanglang Dharma” are the work of one of the faculty members of the Fashion Design Study Program at ISI Denpasar, Dr. A.A.Ngr.Anom Mayun K.Tenaya, M.Si. The costumes, consisting of clothing and gelungan headpieces, were specially designed for the 11 characters of the dance drama. The characters include Cupak, Gerantang, Prabu, Putri, Galuh, Banasati, Tuadaya, Penasar, Wijil, Pan Bekung, and Men Bekung.
Dr. A.A.Ngr.Anom Mayun K.Tenaya, M.Si., explained that the costume making process began in January 2024 and was completed by the end of February 2024. These costumes are not only his own work but also involve collaboration with faculty members of the Visual Communication Design Study Program, namely Cokorda Alit Artawan, S.Sn., M.Sn. The collaboration between these two study programs has produced stunning costumes that enrich the visual aspect of the dance drama performance.
Dr. A.A.Ngr.Anom Mayun K.Tenaya, M.Si., explained that they started by conducting in-depth research on the characters and backgrounds of each character in the dance drama. After that, they designed costume concepts that reinforce the identity and personality of each character.
Next, the design team selected materials that matched the desired theme and aesthetics. They considered factors such as comfort for the dancers, durability, and the ability to express body movements freely.

Once the design and materials were decided, the manufacturing process began meticulously. From fabric cutting, hand stitching, to small details such as embellishments and accessories, everything was done with dedication. Collaboration between faculty members of the Fashion Design and Visual Communication Design Programs ensures that each costume not only reflects visual beauty but also conveys a strong narrative.
“The creative process of making costumes for ‘Cupak Gerantang Anglanglang Dharma’ has been an inspiring journey for us. We strive to create costumes that not only enhance visual appearance but also depict the character and profound meaning of each character in the dance drama,” said the faculty member born on March 1, 1968. The composition of the Karawitan Study Program, Faculty of Performing Arts, ISI Denpasar, became the main accompaniment in the dance drama “Cupak Gerantang Anglanglang Dharma”. Not only that, the Balinese gamelan also complemented the performance by accompanying the Kakuwung War Dance and Rejang Sadhyang Ulu Rani, and presenting Tabuh Kebyar Dang Citta Utsawa and Tabuh Gambang Suling as the opening acts.
This monumental and harmonious traditional Balinese music piece was composed by three prominent lecturers from the Faculty of Performing Arts, ISI Denpasar, namely Dean Dr. I Ketut Garwa, Coordinator of the Karawitan Arts Study Program I Nyoman Kariasa, M.Sn., and Head of the Performing Arts Education Study Program Laboratory, I Wayan Diana, S.Sn., M.Sn.

According to the Coordinator of the Karawitan Arts Study Program I Nyoman Kariasa, M.Sn., the composition of the percussion for the Bhakti Widya Kahuripan performance has been prepared and practiced with students for 2 months, starting from January 2024. A total of 24 percussionists contributed to perfecting this work. They consisted of 4 lecturers, 3 educational staff, and 17 students of the Karawitan Arts Study Program.
“This composition is a form of realization of the learning outcomes that students of Karawitan Study Program have obtained and demonstrates their dedication to the rich values and beauty of traditional Balinese art,” he said.
Nyoman Kariasa hopes that this performance will not only enrich the local community’s artistic insight but also serve as tangible evidence of the sustainability of Bali’s cultural heritage that needs to be preserved and appreciated by younger generations. “With the spirit of Bhakti Widya Kahuripan, ISI Denpasar continues to play an active role in preserving and developing traditional arts as an integral part of Indonesia’s cultural identity,” he said. The Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar-Bali presented an ecological performance titled “Cupak Gerantang Anglanglang Dharma” at Jaba Pura Pasar Agung, Batur Village, Kintamani Subdistrict, Bangli Regency, on Sunday, March 3, 2024, in the evening. This dance drama performance, which was part of the 2024 Bhakti Widya Kahuripan Program, was presented collaboratively by 100 lecturers, educational staff, and students of ISI Denpasar with the support of the Batur community.
ISI Denpasar Rector, Prof. Dr. I Wayan ‘Kun’ Adnyana, stated that the performance of “Cupak Gerantang Anglanglang Dharma” was an actualization of the learning process for ISI Denpasar students. The play, which had been rehearsed for two months, involved director I Kadek Widnyana, M.Sn., choreographer I Gede Oka Surya Negara, M.Sn., with compositions by Dr. Ketut Garwa and I Nyoman Kariasa, M.Sn. In their performance, the characters wore new designs of headpieces and costumes by A.A.Ngr.Anom Mayun K.Tenaya, M.Si, and Cokorda Alit Artawan, S.Sn., M.Sn.

On the morning before the art performance, ISI Denpasar conducted the Mulang Pakelem ceremony at three points, namely at the peaks of Kanginan and Kauhan Mount Batur, and at Lake Batur. Pakelem, in the form of black chickens and ducks, was offered with the intention of requesting and maintaining the harmony of the universe.
“During those three days (March 2-4, 2024), we conducted a journey akin to yatra, entered sacred ceremonial spaces, then practiced for a long time to strengthen the ecological performance of Cupak Gerantang Anglanglang Dharma with new costumes and headpieces premiered that night,” said the Professor of Art History.

Prof. Kun Adnyana revealed that the essence of this activity was to bring the academic community, especially students, closer to experiences related to the sacredness of Balinese culture. “Considering creative higher education institutions like ISI Denpasar, we greatly needed spaces for spiritual enrichment, feelings, and empathy towards the vortex of civilization and the noble culture of Bali. Only then could we strengthen and actualize our spiritual sense,” he added.
Aside from the Cupak Gerantang dance drama, ISI Denpasar also presented Tabuh Kebyar Dang Citta Utsawa, Tari Baris Kakuwung and Rejang Sadhyang Ulu Ranu, as well as Tabuh Gambang Suling as the opening.

Cupak Gerantang Anglanglang Dharma told the story of two siblings, Cupak and Grantang, who had completely different characteristics. Cupak reflected all the bad qualities of humans, he was greedy, envious, and often betrayed. Meanwhile, Grantang, the younger brother, had good manners and polite speech.
One day, they participated in a contest to rescue the Princess of the Kediri Kingdom who was kidnapped by the Giant Benaru. Grantang managed to defeat the Giant Benaru. However, through deceit, Cupak harmed and tricked Grantang and brought the Princess to the palace, claiming to have rescued her.

The King then crowned Cupak as the new king as a reward for bringing his daughter back to the palace safely. Cupak celebrated his coronation by devouring food greedily without etiquette.
Unexpectedly, Grantang, who was thought to be dead, came to the palace to confront Cupak. Cupak, who possessed the power of Brahma Kundawijaya by the blessing of Lord Brahma, transformed into Rangda. Meanwhile, Grantang, who received the blessing of Lord Iswara, transformed into Barong Swari.
The performance of “Cupak Gerantang Anglanglang Dharma” captivated the audience, mostly the Batur community, with its strong narrative, innovative artistic composition, environmentally-based choreography, accompanied by melodic gamelan compositions, and supported by performance props combined with exquisite lighting.

Jero Penyarikan Duwuran Batur, who also witnessed the performance, expressed joy at the selection of Batur as the venue for this sacred art presentation, especially Pura Pasar Agung, believed to be the meeting place of Purusa and Pradana. Over the past two years, ISI Denpasar had staged ecological art performances in the Batur area, namely Nuwur Kukuwung Ranu in 2022 and Batur Ulu Pasuwakan in 2023 at Pura Segara Danu Batur.
“The ecological performances by ISI Denpasar have proven to inspire at least the people I know. Activities through artistic spaces allow the principles and philosophy of Batur’s local wisdom to be understood. Hopefully, this movement can continue to flow and become a pattern for enlightenment spaces in the future for better devotion, understanding, and reverence,” he said.
Jero Penyarikan Duwuran extended congratulations and expressed gratitude to the entire academic community of ISI Denpasar for the performance of “Cupak Gerantang Anglanglang Dharma” and hoped that the cooperation between ISI Denpasar and the Batur Village would continue. “Thank you for choosing Batur as a space for artistic elaboration, and may what has been built be continually nurtured so that from its source, it can provide a flow of wisdom for the Balinese community,” said the alumnus of Ancient Javanese Literature at Udayana University (ISIDps/Humas-RT).”
