Fostering Synergy with High Schools across Bali: ISI Denpasar Hosts Meet-and-Greet with High School Principals in Bali Province

In response to the challenge of enhancing Gross Enrollment Ratio in Higher Education Institutions across Bali Province, while also disseminating information regarding the college admission selection system, the Indonesian Institute of the Arts Denpasar (ISI Denpasar) organized a Meet-and-Greet session with High School Principals from across Bali Province. This friendly gathering took place at the Cianjur Grilled Fish Restaurant, located on Jl. Cok Agung Tresna, Sumerta Kelod, East Denpasar District, Denpasar City, on Friday, February 2nd, 2024.

Attended by principals from eleven high schools in Bali, including the principals of SMKN 3 Sukawati, SMKN 5 Denpasar, SMKN 1 Denpasar, SMKN TI Bali Global Badung, and SMK TI Bali Global Denpasar, this congenial meeting also welcomed the heads of SMA Negeri 1 Ubud, SMKN 1 Sukawati, SMAN 7 Denpasar, SMAN 3 Denpasar, SMKN 4 Denpasar, SMAN 1 Kuta, SMAN 2 Denpasar, and SMKN 2 Sukawati.

The principals and administrative figures from the attending high schools exhibited great enthusiasm in receiving information concerning the National Selection for New Student Admissions (SNPMB) for the 2024 Bachelor’s and Applied Bachelor’s Programs. Two selection pathways are available to students, namely the National Selection Based on Achievement (SNBP) and the National Selection Based on Tests (SNBT). This information was disseminated by the Rector of ISI Denpasar, Prof. Dr. I Wayan Adnyana, alongside the Vice Rectors for Academic Affairs, Dr. Anak Agung Gde Rai Remawa, and for Cooperation, Prof. Dr. Komang Sudirga.

Prof. Dr. I Wayan ‘Kun’ Adnyana, the Rector of ISI Denpasar, emphasized the importance of effective synergy between high schools and higher education institutions in spreading awareness regarding the college admission selection system. “A strong collaboration between secondary schools and higher education institutions is crucial in disseminating information about the college admission selection system. This synergy will provide students with a better understanding of the selection pathways that align with their potentials and interests,” stated the distinguished Professor of Art History.

ISI Denpasar itself offers 15 Bachelor’s and Applied Bachelor’s Programs for the Academic Year 2024/2025 admissions, including programs in Dance, Traditional Music (Karawitan), Puppetry (Pedalangan), Performing Arts Education, Music, Theater, Fine Arts, Crafts, Interior Design, Visual Communication Design, Photography, Fashion Design, Film and TV Production, Product Design, and Animation. The Indonesian Institute of the Arts Denpasar (ISI Denpasar) is currently preparing for International Accreditation for four (4) study programs. In efforts to refine these preparations, ISI Denpasar conducted a Workshop Simulation for International Accreditation Visitation at the Nata Widya Sabha Building, 2nd floor of the ISI Denpasar Rectorate, from January 28 to 31, 2024.

The workshop themed “Bali Tantu Bhuwana” (Achieving Outstanding Accreditation) featured two academics from Yogyakarta State University as speakers. They are Dyah Setyowati Ciptaningrum, S.Pd., M.Ed., Ed.D., and Dr. Phil. Nurhening Yunarti, S.Pd., M.T. UNY was chosen as the contributor because it already has internationally accredited programs. AQAS is one of the accreditation agencies selected by UNY to assess several study programs, including English Language Bachelor’s, English Language Education Master’s, and Applied Linguistics Master’s.

The workshop was opened by the Vice Rector for Planning and Cooperation, Prof. Dr. I Komang Sudirga. Prof. Sudirga stated that the workshop was held in preparation for the International Accreditation field visits to four (4) Study Programs (Prodi) within the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar. The concerned programs are the Karawitan Bachelor’s Program, Fine Arts Bachelor’s Program, Applied Fashion Design Bachelor’s Program, and Arts Doctoral Program. The International Accreditation Visitation will be conducted in March 2024 by AQAS (Agency for Quality Assurance through Accreditation of Study Programs), a higher education quality assurance agency in Germany.

“Through this workshop, we hope that the speakers can provide guidance and insights into the accreditation process conducted by AQAS. So, when the assessors come to our campus, our preparations will be thorough,” hoped Prof. Komang Sudirga.

Workshop speakers conducted simulations of International Accreditation visitations, including examinations of classrooms, learning support buildings, and faculty rooms. Additionally, they simulated interview sessions with faculty members, students, and partners from each assessed study program.

The Indonesian Institute of the Arts Denpasar (ISI Denpasar) hosted an International Workshop titled Matra-Manu-Citra. The workshop, held collaboratively between ISI Denpasar and the National Academy of Arts, Culture and Heritage (Akademi Seni Budaya dan Wawasan Kebangsaan or ASWARA) Malaysia, took place at Wantilan Loka Widya Sabha, ISI Denpasar, on Thursday, January 25, 2024. The “Matra-Manu-Citra” workshop is a realization of the Bali-Bhuwana-Kanti (Global-Bali Arts Network Project) under the Bali Padma Bhuwana IV scheme. ISI Denpasar featured two speakers, namely the Rector of ASWARA, Prof. Ts. Dr. Ruslan Abdul Rahim, and the Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, Prof. Madya Ts. Dr. Khairul Azril Ismail. The workshop was attended by dozens of students from the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design at ISI Denpasar.

Rector of ISI Denpasar Prof. Dr. I Wayan ‘Kun’ Adnyana explained that the workshop focused on the topic of “New Painting on Drawing” or the technique of painting using colored pencils that can be easily mixed and blended. Students had the opportunity to learn new painting techniques guided directly by the two competent speakers in the field of fine arts. “This workshop provides a rare opportunity for students to explore new techniques in painting and enrich their understanding of creativity in the visual arts,” said the Professor of Art History.

ASWARA Rector Prof. Ts. Dr. Ruslan Abdul Rahim expressed his joy at seeing the extraordinary spirit and enthusiasm of ISI Denpasar students in participating in this workshop. He emphasized that the success of this workshop marks an important milestone in strengthening the relationship between ISI Denpasar and ASWARA Malaysia, while also making a significant contribution to the development of fine arts in both countries. “I am truly impressed by the spirit and dedication of ISI Denpasar students. Their active participation not only reflects a commitment to the global development of fine arts but also demonstrates cross-country collaboration in enriching culture and creativity in the art world,” he said. Darmasiswa RI students of the Indonesian Institute of the Arts Denpasar (ISI Denpasar) presented their works of learning in the Dissemination of Darmasiswa Students’ Art Works for the Academic Year 2023/2024. The dissemination titled “Manawa-Manah-Manu” took place at Nata-Citta Art Space (N-CAS) ISI Denpasar on Wednesday, January 31, 2024. This dissemination activity is a continuation of the Bali Nata Bhuwana Plus learning program.

The dissemination, presented through an exhibition and art performances, was participated in by 11 Darmasiswa students who had undergone lectures at ISI Denpasar for one semester. For the Academic Year 2023/2024, ISI Denpasar welcomed Darmasiswa RI students from nine countries, including one student each from Poland, Armenia, Jordan, Spain, Ukraine, Slovakia, Austria, Belarus, and three students from India. These international students attended lectures alongside regular ISI Denpasar students in various study programs.

The International Affairs Coordinator of ISI Denpasar, also the Chair of the “Manawa-Manah-Manu” Dissemination Organizing Committee, expressed that Darmasiswa students presented a dozen paintings in this exhibition. Besides the Darmasiswa students, a Global-Bali Arts Short Course student, Artemi Lykou, also showcased his paintings.

“This is an opportunity for Darmasiswa students at ISI Denpasar to showcase their artworks to the public after undergoing one semester of learning in the creative environment of ISI Denpasar,” said the English Language Lecturer.

In addition to the painting exhibition, Darmasiswa students also presented various art performances. These included two contemporary dance performances by Mariia Handzel and Florentina Gonzales, along with Darmasiswa students from Udayana University, Nanoko Fujimura. Rajeev Kumar, an Indian Darmasiswa student, showcased his skills in playing the Tabla (a traditional Indian musical instrument).

The Rector of ISI Denpasar, Prof. Dr. I Wayan ‘Kun’ Adnyana, expressed pride in the enthusiasm of these international students in disseminating their learning outcomes at ISI Denpasar. Prof. Kun emphasized the importance of international collaboration in embracing and appreciating the diversity of arts, acknowledging that such achievements are the result of close cooperation and mutual understanding among students from various cultural backgrounds.

“I highly appreciate the enthusiasm and dedication of Darmasiswa students in presenting their best artworks. This is evidence of the close cross-cultural cooperation within the ISI Denpasar campus environment,” said the Senior Professor of Art History.

Prof. Kun hopes that in the upcoming semester, Darmasiswa students can create even more stunning works. ISI Denpasar is committed to providing full support for the development of students’ talents and creative potentials, while encouraging them to innovate and strive for excellence continually.

The “Manawa-Manah-Manu” Dissemination was enlivened by a Cultural Dialogue activity. Moderated by Ni Putu Tisna Andayani, S.S., M.Hum, the discussion provided an interactive platform for students to share their experiences during their studies at ISI Denpasar.

Darmasiswa student from India, Rajeev Kumar, shared his experience during his studies at ISI Denpasar. He recounted facing several challenges upon his arrival at ISI Denpasar as he had to adapt to a new environment. However, he was grateful to have successfully completed this first semester. “We finish this first semester with wonderful moments. We had dance performances and displayed our paintings,” said the Karawitan Program Darmasiswa.

Rajeev expressed his admiration for the beauty of Balinese art. Learning Balinese arts, particularly Karawitan, was an extraordinary experience for him. As a beginner in learning Karawitan, Rajeev was captivated by the complexity of Balinese traditional music, which connected him to a meaningful artistic heritage. “Bali’s art is truly captivating and inspiring,” he remarked.

As information, the Darmasiswa RI Program is a non-degree scholarship offered to all foreign students from countries with diplomatic relations with Indonesia to study language, arts, and culture. This program is organized by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemdikbudristek) in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu). 105 fashion designs by students of the Fashion Design Program, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Indonesian Institute of the Arts Denpasar (ISI Denpasar) captivated the audience at the Fashion Show “Diversity of Indonesia #7”. The fashion show was held as part of the dissemination of final projects of the Independent Learning- Independent Campus (Merdeka Belajar-Kampus Merdeka or MBKM) at Citta Kelangan Building, 3rd Floor, ISI Denpasar, on Saturday, January 20, 2024, in the evening. This 7th fashion show since 2016 was attended by hundreds of invited guests, including ISI Denpasar Rector Prof. Dr. I Wayan ‘Kun’ Adnyana and other officials from ISI Denpasar, lecturers, and educational staff. Also present were representatives from MBKM partners of ISI Denpasar, students’ parents/guardians, and other guests.

The Chairperson of the Fashion Show Committee, Ni Luh Nila Febrianti, reported that 35 students participated in the dissemination of MBKM final projects under the theme Diversity of Indonesia #7. Each student created 3 fashion pieces, consisting of ready-to-wear, ready-to-wear deluxe, and semi-couture. A total of 105 student fashion pieces were showcased by professional models from I AM Model Management Bali.

The dissemination process of MBKM final projects involved several stages, starting from the collection of proposals and design selection in September. The subsequent process involved assistance and evaluation with supervisors supported by Business and Industrial World (DUDI) partners. The final stage included a photoshoot session leading up to the peak event of the fashion show.

Nila Febrianti expressed deep gratitude to all parties who supported the event. “To the leadership of ISI Denpasar, lecturers, DUDI partners who provided guidance, event performers, alumni, and other event supporters. Without their support, this event would not have been possible,” said the 7th-semester Fashion Design program student.

ISI Denpasar Rector, Prof. Dr. I Wayan ‘Kun’ Adnyana, appreciated the dedication of students in organizing the dissemination of MBKM Fashion Design Program final projects for the odd semester of the academic year 2023/2024. Prof. Kun Adnyana expressed his pride in the outstanding achievements of the brilliant generation of Indonesian designers reflected in this fashion show. This former Head of the Bali Provincial Cultural Office emphasized the importance of the creative industry in economic growth, especially the fashion world, which is one of the 17 sub-sectors of the creative industry promoted by the government. “The fashion world is an integral part of the continuously evolving creative industry. Through the spirit of independent learning, together we can build an outstanding generation for our nation in the fashion world,” said this Professor of Art History.

The Fashion Design Program at ISI Denpasar is currently undergoing international accreditation to align with national-level design programs. He hopes that through noble intentions and determination, students and all involved parties can collectively build an outstanding generation for our nation in the continuously growing and evolving fashion world. University of Western Australia Looking Forward to Collaborates with ISI Denpasar on the Future

Global Engagement Manager at the University of Western Australia (UWA), Onna Evdokimoff, paid a visit to the Indonesian Institute of the Arts, Denpasar (ISI Denpasar) on Wednesday, October 4, 2023. The visit was warmly received by Dr. I Komang Arba Wirawan, S.Sn., M.Si, the Head of the Academic, Student Affairs, Planning, and Cooperation Bureau, at the Lounge of ISI Denpasar. Also in attendance were Dr. I Gusti Ngurah Sudibya, SST., M.Sn., the Head of the General and Financial Bureau, Ni Putu Tisna Andayani, S.S., M.Hum, the Coordinator of the International Affairs Center, Dr. Drs. I Wayan Suardana, M.Sn., the Chairman of LP2MPP, Dr. I Gede Yudarta, S.Skar., M.Si., the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs of the Faculty of Performing Arts, Dr. I Made Pande Artadi, S.Sn., M.Sn., Putu Gede Satria Kharismawan, M.Sn, a lecturer in the Visual Communication Design Study Program, and the Public Relations team from ISI Denpasar, Ni Komang Artini, S.S., and Ni Luh Rara Tian Anyar Sari, S.S.

Onna Evdokimoff mentioned that her visit aimed to explore the continuation of the collaboration between UWA and ISI Denpasar, as outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This MoU was signed by the Rector of ISI Denpasar and the Vice Counsellor of UWA in April 2023. The proposed collaboration includes student exchanges, faculty exchanges, short courses, and other programs. She expressed UWA’s strong interest in learning about Balinese arts, design, landscape, and architecture. “We look forward to collaborating with ISI Denpasar in the future. It can lead to exciting opportunities for mutual growth and achievement,” she said.

Dr. I Komang Arba Wirawan welcomed the representatives from the University of Western Australia. He mentioned that there were numerous collaboration possibilities between ISI Denpasar and UWA, such as joint research, organizing seminars or academic conferences, and more. He also introduced the International Community Engagement Program – Nata Citta Bhuwana (PKMI-NCB), which targets schools to provide art education. “This program has been implemented in Malaysia recently. Hopefully, we can implement it in Australia in the future in collaboration with UWA,” Dr. Arba expressed.

Onna shared her excitement about visiting ISI Denpasar. She was impressed by the campus’s architectural design, deeply rooted in Balinese art and culture. She took the opportunity to explore the campus of ISI Denpasar, including a visit to the museum and library in the Lata Mahosadhi Building. Onna Evdokimoff conveyed this visit in order to explore the continuation of cooperation between UWA and ISI Denpasar which has been contained in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The MoU has been signed by the Rector of ISI Denpasar and Vice Counsellor of UWA in April 2023. The cooperation offered, among others, student exchanges, lecturer exchanges, short courses, and other programs. He admitted that UWA was very interested in learning about Balinese art, design, landscape, and architecture. “We look forward to collaborating with ISI Denpasar in the future. It can lead to exciting opportunities for mutual growth and achievement,” she said.

The Head of the Bureau of Academic, Student Affairs, Planning and Cooperation Dr. I Komang Arba Wirawan, S.Sn., M.Si is welcomed the arrival of representatives of the University of Western Australia. According to him, there are many collaborations that can be carried out by ISI Denpasar and UWA, such as joint research, organizing seminars or scientific conferences, and so on. He also offers the International Community Service program – Nata Citta Bhuwana (PKMI-NCB). This program is implemented by targeting schools to provide art learning. “This program has been implemented in Malaysia some time ago. Hopefully it can be implemented in Australia in the future in collaboration with UWA, “he said.

Onna expressed her gratitude in visiting ISI Denpasar. She admitted that she was fascinated by the campus architecture which is very thick with Balinese art and culture. She took the time to explore the ISI Denpasar campus. She visited the museum and library in the Lata Mahosadhi Building. Onna also had the opportunity to participate in making eco-printing with students of Fashion Design Study Program, ISI Denpasar. (ISIDps/PR).
