The Indonesian Institute of the Arts Bali (ISI BALI), in collaboration with the Badung Regency Tourism Office’s Creative Economy Committee and Beatland, organized a Beatbox Workshop at the Natya Mandala Building, ISI BALI, on Wednesday (October 7). The workshop featured Russian twin beatboxers Pavel Frolikov, known as Pash, and Evgeny Frolikov, known as Jayton, who perform as part of the beatboxing duo Mad Twinz.

The workshop was attended by dozens of ISI BALI students, particularly those from the Karawitan Study Program and the Music Study Program. The activity was conducted interactively, combining an introduction to basic beatboxing techniques, demonstrations, and hands-on practice with the participants.

Mad Twinz introduced beatboxing as a form of musical exploration that utilizes the human voice to produce various rhythmic elements and sounds. The students were not only invited to observe the techniques demonstrated but also to practice a range of beatboxing techniques directly under the guidance of Pash and Jayton.

The workshop became even more engaging when Mad Twinz collaborated with ISI BALI students to explore the combination of beatboxing with the traditional Balinese musical instrument Jegog. This experiment brought together the vocal and rhythmic characteristics of beatboxing with the distinctive bamboo timbre of the Jegog, creating a unique musical experience while opening up new possibilities for musical development and exploration.

Vice Dean for Student Affairs and Cooperation of the Faculty of Performing Arts at ISI BALI, Dr. I Kadek Widnyana, who opened the workshop, stated that the activity was expected to provide students with new experiences while encouraging them to further develop their creativity.

“Through this workshop, we hope that participants will not only gain knowledge and technical skills in beatboxing but also draw inspiration to continue creating and developing their potential,” he said.

He further noted that the workshop demonstrated the importance of collaboration among various stakeholders in developing a creative ecosystem. Collaboration among creative practitioners, educational institutions, communities, and government agencies provides a strategic platform for bringing together knowledge, experience, and new ideas.

“We also see this activity as an excellent example of collaboration among creative practitioners, educational institutions, communities, and government agencies. Such collaboration needs to be continuously developed to strengthen the creative economy ecosystem in Badung Regency and Bali more broadly,” he added.

For ISI BALI students, the presence of Mad Twinz provided an opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge of techniques and musical approaches within beatboxing culture directly from professional practitioners. Meanwhile, the exploration of beatboxing with Jegog was one of the highlights of the workshop, demonstrating how traditional music can be brought into dialogue with contemporary forms of musical expression.

The interaction between the speakers and participants was dynamic and communicative. The students showed enthusiasm as they followed the demonstrations, practiced beatboxing techniques, and participated in the collaborative sessions. The workshop thus served not only as a platform for skills transfer but also as a space for experimentation and the discovery of new musical possibilities. (ISIBALI/Public Relations)
