Community Service through a Wayang Wong Performance by the Puppetry Arts Study Program, Faculty of Performing Arts, Indonesian Institute of the Arts Bali (ISI Bali)

Oct 22, 2026 | News

The Wayang Wong Association of the Puppetry Arts Study Program, Faculty of Performing Arts (FSP), Indonesian Institute of the Arts Bali (ISI Bali), conducted a community service program by presenting a sesolahan tabuh and Wayang Wong dance performance in conjunction with the ceremonies of Padudusan Alit, Mupuk Padagingan, Tawur Balik Sumpah, and Ngresigana at Pura Alas Arum, Banjar Lodsema, Mawang Traditional Village, Ubud District, Gianyar Regency, Bali. The program involved lecturers, currently enrolled students, and alumni of the Puppetry Arts Study Program, as well as several educational staff members and lecturers from the Faculty of Performing Arts.

The activity was held on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, beginning at 8:00 p.m. Central Indonesian Time (WITA) and continuing until its completion. This community service initiative was organized in response to a formal request from the temple committee, which invited ISI Bali to contribute through ayah-ayahan, a form of customary service and communal obligation within Balinese Hindu society. The request was subsequently referred directly to the Faculty of Performing Arts for implementation.

Prior to the event, the designated participants were assembled and undertook intensive rehearsals over several days to ensure the highest possible quality of performance. This preparation was intended not only to support the successful execution of the ceremonial performance but also to enhance the reputation of ISI Bali within the local community.

Similar community service activities have previously been conducted on the ISI Bali campus to support the annual temple anniversary ceremony (piodalan) at Pura Padma Nareswara, ISI Bali. Comparable performances have also been presented on several occasions in traditional villages across Bali.

Through this initiative, the program is expected to serve as a platform for learning, research, community empowerment, and the revitalization of Wayang Wong as a traditional performing art in Bali. Furthermore, the activity represents an effort to strengthen the relationship between higher arts education institutions and local communities while supporting the preservation and continued development of Bali’s cultural heritage.
