Master Program

Description

The Master’s Program in Design (PS-DPM) is committed to becoming a center of excellence in design studies and practice grounded in local wisdom, employing a multidisciplinary approach with a global orientation. This program is designed to address the challenges of the contemporary design world, which demands synergy between tradition, technological innovation, and cross-cultural understanding. Through a curriculum that integrates theory, research, and creative practice, the program fosters critical thinking skills, ethical awareness, and cultural sensitivity in every student. The values of pluralism and the multicultural heritage of the Indonesian archipelago serve as key sources of inspiration in developing design thinking that is universal and relevant to global dynamics.

Academic activities in the Master’s Program in Design (PS-DPM) include research in design studies and practice, the creation of innovative works, and the publication of research outcomes that contribute to the advancement of art, design, and culture. The program also actively establishes collaborations with various institutions, both nationally and internationally, to expand scholarly networks and professional collaboration opportunities. As a dynamic academic environment, the Master’s Program in Design strives to cultivate designers, researchers, and design thinkers who are creative, ethical, and globally competitive, and who are prepared to contribute to the future development of culture and the creative industries.

Upon completion of their studies, graduates of the Master’s Program in Design are awarded the academic degree of Master of Design (M.Ds.).

  • To enhance research, creative production, and the dissemination of learning outcomes in support of the advancement of art and culture;

  • To establish collaboration with relevant stakeholders for the development of design studies research, design practice research, and the dissemination of students’ research and design outcomes;

  • To strengthen program resources (faculty and educational staff) in order to achieve graduates in line with the established vision.

Graduate Profile

Designer

Designers are able to develop design works with a high level of novelty based on science and technology. They are capable of creating design works through interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary approaches, as well as producing designs that reflect the diversity of local cultural roots and the cultures of the Indonesian archipelago.

Design Form Researcher

Design Form Researchers (academics/lecturers, researchers/analysts, writers, curators, and critics of design works/forms) are capable of studying and analyzing design forms using scientific methodologies. They master and apply interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches, and are able to implement and develop design theories for the benefit of society, industry, and education. They possess critical and analytical thinking skills and are able to provide solutions to design-related problems.

Entrepreneur

Design Entrepreneurs (Design Consultants) are able to conduct entrepreneurship and design management based on science and technology, and to manage design consultancy services using interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary approaches. They are capable of connecting design knowledge with various social realities, building networks with relevant partners, and understanding economic dynamics, globalization, competitive environments and their challenges, as well as changes in social behavior and market trends.

Dr. Ida Ayu Dyah Maharani, ST, M.Ds

Dr. Ida Ayu Dyah Maharani, ST, M.Ds earned her doctoral degree from the Doctoral Program in Fine Art and Design at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) in 2018. She has been an active lecturer at the Master’s Program in Design and the Interior Design Program at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Bali since 2006. Her areas of expertise include interior design, history, and vernacular architecture. In addition to her academic responsibilities, she is actively involved in research and community engagement. Selected research projects over the past five years include: Revitalization of Bali Aga Residential Buildings as an Effort to Fulfill Decent Housing Needs (2021). Application of Aesthetic Values of Craft Art in Pendant Lamp Shades and Their Influence on Lighting Effectiveness (2023). Selected publications in the past five years include: Revitalization of Bali Aga Residential Buildings as a Model for Decent Housing Fulfillment (Case Study: Kintamani, Bangli) – 2021. Dr. Alit Kumala Dewi, S.Sn.,M.Ds,

Dr. Alit Kumala Dewi, S.Sn., M.Ds was born in Denpasar, Bali, on March 17, 1985. She completed her undergraduate studies in Fine Arts and Design, majoring in Visual Communication Design, at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar in 2007, and was appointed as a lecturer in the Visual Communication Design Program, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design at ISI Denpasar in 2008.

She pursued her Master’s degree in Design at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), graduating in 2011. In 2017, she began her Doctoral Program in Art Studies at the Postgraduate School of ISI Denpasar and earned her Doctorate in 2021. Currently, she serves as a lecturer in both the Visual Communication Design Program and the Postgraduate Program at ISI Bali. Her academic activities include teaching, research, community service, participation in seminars, and exhibiting artworks at national and international levels. In addition, she is actively involved as a judge, journal reviewer, and speaker, particularly in the fields of promotion and advertising.
