DESCRIPTION

The Doctoral Program in Design is established to provide higher education at Level 9 of the Indonesian National Qualifications Framework (KKNI), emphasizing advanced mastery of design knowledge and expertise through multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary approaches. This program serves as a platform for the development of design scholarship and creative practice grounded in the noble values of Balinese culture and Indonesian local wisdom, while fostering innovation, originality, and global relevance.

Through an integrated process of learning, research, and creative practice, the program encourages the production of design research and works that are both functional and contributive to societal progress. Its main focus lies in the development of new design methods and scientific propositions capable of addressing contemporary social, cultural, and technological challenges. Consequently, graduates of the Doctoral Program in Design are expected to become visionary and creative scholar-designers who play a strategic role in advancing design knowledge and practice at both national and international levels.

VISION

To establish a Doctoral Program in Design that is distinctive, excellent, and globally reputable, advancing design inquiry and creation inspired by the nobility of Balinese culture, Indonesian local wisdom, and innovation in contemporary design.

MISSION

  • To provide higher education in design at Level 9 of the Indonesian National Qualifications Framework (KKNI) through multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary approaches;

  • To conduct learning, research, and design creation rooted in the noble values of Balinese culture and Indonesian local wisdom, while promoting innovation and originality; and

  • To carry out research and community engagement oriented toward solving societal problems and discovering new design propositions and methods.

Prof. Dr. Wayan ‘Kun' Adnyana

Prof. Dr. Wayan ‘Kun’ Adnyana, born in Bangli, Bali, on April 4, 1976, was conferred the title of Professor in the field of Art History in 2019. In addition to being a professional visual artist who has held prestigious solo exhibitions internationally—in Tainan, Taiwan (2018), Sydney, Australia (2019), and Slupsk, Poland (2023)—he also served as the Head of the Bali Provincial Office of Culture (2019–2021). He is currently serving as the Rector of the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Bali for the 2021–2025 and 2025–2029 terms.

Professor Kun has been actively writing on art and culture since a young age, contributing articles to prominent national publications such as Kompas, Tempo, Media Indonesia, Suara Merdeka, Jawa Pos–Radar Bali, Bali Post, among others. He conducted in-depth research on Balinese painting in Leiden, Haarlem, and Amsterdam (2015), and led a cultural diplomacy mission to Paris, France (2023). As a distinguished curator of fine art, he has worked with several prestigious national and international galleries including the National Gallery of Indonesia in Jakarta, Art 1 (Mondecor) Gallery, Tonyraka Art Gallery, Gajah Gallery (Singapore), Sudakara Art Space, and major exhibitions such as Bali Megarupa and Bali Kandarupa (2021–2023).

His published works include: Pita Maha: A Social Movement of Balinese Painting in the 1930s (KPG, 2018), Barong Landung: Anak Agung Sobrat (2017), Pita Prada: Golden Creativity (with Agus Darmawan T and Jean Couteau, 2009), Gigih Wiyono: Diva Sri Migrasi (with M. Dwi Marianto, 2008), and Nalar Rupa Perupa (2007).

He has also initiated and directed several large-scale collaborative performances, such as: Gambyuh Agung Traditional Orchestra Composition, Bali (2021); the ecological performance Nuwur Kukuwung Ranu in Kintamani, Bali (2022); Candet Ding Pituning Pitu Indonesia Raya at Tegowangi Temple, Kediri (2022); and the international performance Waruna Mukti Dwipantara at the Fête de l’Archipel event in Paris, France (2023). He has served as a jury member for various cultural awards, including Dharma Kusuma (2021–2023), Bali-Bhuwana Mahottama Nugraha, Bali-Bhuwana Nata Kerthi Nugraha, and Bali-Dwipantara Nata Kerthi Nugraha (2021–2023).

Prof. Dr. Anak Agung Gde Bagus Udayana, S.Sn., M.Si

Prof. Dr. Anak Agung Gde Bagus Udayana, S.Sn., M.Si. is a Professor in the field of Visual Communication Design. He has received several honors, including the Satyalancana Karya Satya X Year award in 2011 and the XX Year award in 2022. His contributions to design include the creation of branding and logo designs for institutions such as PT. BPR Bank Daerah Gianyar (2020), Perumda Air Minum Tirta Sanjiwani (2020), PT. BPR Bank Daerah Bangli (2021), Tenganan Village (2022), and PT Hari Hari Mesari (2022). His academic publications include the books Branding Gianyar Kabupaten Kreatif (2019) and Kapita Selekta Citraleka Desain: Dialectics of Art, Design, and Culture in the Era of the Industrial Revolution 4.0 (2020). He has also participated in art and design exhibitions, including the exhibition at Okinawa Prefectural University of Art (2019) and the National Exhibition Bali Dwipantara Adirupa III (2023).

Dr. Anak Agung Gede Rai Remawa

Born in Banjar Tengah, Tampaksiring Village, Gianyar, on December 31, 1964. Earned a Doctorate in Fine Arts and Design in 2015 from the Graduate School of the Bandung Institute of Technology (Institut Teknologi Bandung – ITB). His areas of expertise include Interior Design and Architecture, with a focus on various research topics such as Spatial Aesthetics, Traditional Balinese Interior and Architecture, and Warnabali based on traditional Balinese pigments. His research has led to the formulation of Ashta Bhumi and Ashta Kosali, which he has applied in numerous creative works, including residential houses, community halls (Balai Banjar), pavilions (Wantilan), and temples (Pura), both at the local and international levels.

His creative works presented internationally include Pura Shanta Citta Bhuwana, located in Taman Mini Indonesia, Kallenkote, Zwolle, the Netherlands, and the Taman Bali Indah complex in Dolina Charlotty, Stupsk, Gdansk, Poland. He is a recipient of several honors and awards, including the Satya Lencana 30 Years Service Medal from the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, the Adi Sewaka Nugraha Award from the Governor of Bali, a Recognition Award from the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and the Bali Bhuwana Natakerthi Nugraha Award from the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar.

His research experience includes projects funded by DIPA ISI Denpasar, Fundamental Research (DP2M Dikti), Competitive Grants (DP2M Dikti), the Matching Fund Kedaireka Ristekdikti program, and collaborative research with various institutions such as the Bali Regional Development Planning Agency (Bappeda Bali), the Bangli Regency Tourism Office (Dispar Bangli), the Bali Provincial Cultural Office (Disbud Bali), and the Gianyar Regency Regional Research and Innovation Agency (Brida Gianyar).
