DOCTOR OF ART

Doctoral Program

Description

The Doctoral Program in Art at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Bali is located in the Province of Bali, a region renowned for its unique arts and cultural heritage, which serves as a foundational basis for culturally rooted higher education. Bali’s strong culture of tolerance and the hospitality of its people provide an accessible and supportive environment for researchers to conduct their academic studies. Moreover, Bali serves as a living laboratory of Indonesian culture—an ideal setting for learning, research, and community engagement.

The Doctoral Program in Art at ISI Bali is the only doctoral-level art program in Eastern and Central Indonesia, making it a highly strategic center for the development of art studies, creation, and presentation at Level 9 of the Indonesian National Qualifications Framework (KKNI).

ISI Bali is supported by nine professors who are highly competent in the fields of art and culture, enhancing the learning process within the doctoral program. Additionally, the faculty includes associate professors with doctoral qualifications, all of whom have experience publishing in national and internationally indexed journals, including Scopus. The program is further supported by educational staff with Master’s-level qualifications (S2). These strengths position the program to produce highly qualified graduates capable of competing at both national and international levels.

Learning activities are facilitated in the Citta Kelangen Building, located on the southern side of the ISI Denpasar campus. This facility is highly representative and well-equipped to support doctoral-level education, consisting of six classrooms, a library, a seminar room, faculty offices, and administrative staff rooms. The building is furnished with modern educational tools such as LCD projectors, Wi-Fi technology, a digital repository, digital cameras, computers, printers, and other digital equipment. This infrastructure significantly enhances the learning experience and supports timely student progress and graduation.

VISION

The Doctoral Program in Art at ISI Bali serves as a center of excellence for the development of knowledge and practices in the governance of Indonesian art, design, and culture, with the aim of producing graduates who are expert, character-driven, excellent, and reputable.

MISSION

  • To develop knowledge and practices in Indonesian art and culture through research-based approaches that benefit both society and academia, and gain national and international recognition.

  • To be capable of solving problems in the fields of Indonesian art and cultural studies through interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary approaches.

Graduate Profile

The enhancement of human resource quality and the development of scientific knowledge ultimately lead to increased intellectual capacity and societal well-being, thereby strengthening national sovereignty and competitiveness in the fields of art and culture.

At the international level, the Doctoral Program in Art at ISI Denpasar serves as a platform for cross-cultural and transnational interaction. Over the past fifty years, Bali has increasingly attracted world-class art creators and cultural researchers who come to conduct artistic work or cultural studies—either independently or in collaboration with local artists and scholars. This dynamic fosters a greater global appreciation of Indonesian cultural identity while also promoting broader understanding of the richness, commonality, and diversity of world arts and cultures.
