description

The Karawitan Art Study Program, Faculty of Performing Arts, ISI Bali, is designed to produce professional and competent graduates in the field of Karawitan arts, in accordance with the Indonesian National Qualification Framework (KKNI) Level 6. The curriculum of this program develops three main competencies: as researchers, creators, and performers of Karawitan arts.

Graduates are equipped to conduct critical and contextual studies on Karawitan art phenomena, create compositions in various forms (traditional, innovative, contemporary, and digital), and present works with refined technique and aesthetics. In addition, graduates possess the competence to serve as mentors (instructors, trainers, or educators) and entrepreneurs in the field of Karawitan arts.

Graduates are awarded the academic degree of Bachelor of Arts (S.Sn) and are prepared to take an active role in the preservation, development, and advancement of Karawitan arts at the local, national, and global levels.

VISION

The vision of the Karawitan Study Program is to become a center of excellence in providing education in the field of Karawitan research and creation, based on local wisdom with a universal perspective.

Creator

Graduates possess a strong understanding of the theories, concepts, principles, and techniques of Karawitan composition, and are able to create works that are both creative and innovative. They understand human, environmental, and local wisdom aspects that support the creative process. Graduates master traditional Karawitan, local and international cultures, and demonstrate strong presentation, managerial, and leadership skills. They are skilled in interdisciplinary collaboration, computer-based composition applications, and understand the construction standards within the arts environment. In addition, graduates possess artistic sensitivity, aesthetic intuition, as well as a solid understanding of professional ethics and professionalism.

Researcher

Possesses mastery of research methods, a scientific mindset, and sensitivity to real-world issues. Capable of conducting critical analysis, developing performance concepts, and producing scholarly writings in the field of Karawitan arts. Equipped with broad artistic insight, including mastery of traditional Karawitan as well as local and international cultures.

Performer

Masters the products, materials, concepts, and philosophy of traditional Balinese Karawitan. Capable of developing concepts, cost estimates, and technical specifications for Balinese Karawitan. Possesses sensitivity to community issues and understands environmental studies and local wisdom as foundations for artistic creation. Also demonstrates strong managerial skills.

Karawitan Study Program

I Gde Made Indra Sadguna Ph.D.

I Gde Made Indra Sadguna earned his Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from Florida State University, sponsored by the Fulbright-DIKTI program. He is a lecturer at ISI Bali specializing in Balinese gamelan. As a musician, he has served as an Artist in Residence and has performed in various countries, including Australia, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, India, Malaysia, Canada, and the United States.

Beyond his work as a musician, Indra conducts research on the diversity of Balinese arts, focusing on the complexity and improvisation of Balinese kendang (drumming), the organology of gamelan instruments, and the interrelationship between music and dance in Balinese performing arts. His research findings have been disseminated through national and international journals and conferences.

Prof. Dr. Ni Ketut Dewi Yulianti, M.Hum., M.Sn.

Prof. Dr. Ni Ketut Dewi Yulianti, M.Hum., M.Sn., earned her Doctorate in Linguistics from Udayana University in 2016 and was appointed as a Professor in 2024 with a specialization in cultural linguistics. Among her achievements are the Outstanding Lecturer Award (2017), Selected Translator by Balai Bahasa (2022), and Excellent Civil Servant Performance Award (2024).

In 2025, she was invited to perform at the International Ramayana Festival in India through her work The Search for Sita. Her research focuses on linguistics and cultural arts, which has inspired several dance-drama productions, including The Mercy of Durga Dev and The Blessing of Siva–Visvapujita. Her scholarly works have been published in both national and international indexed journals, including Panggung, Viperarts, JLTR, and JKB.

Wardizal, S.Sen.,M.Si

Wardizal was born in Agam, West Sumatra, on June 24, 1966. He completed his Master’s degree (S2) in Cultural Studies at Udayana University in 2001. His areas of expertise include cultural studies and Karawitan arts.

He has received several honors, including the 10-Year Satyalancana Award from President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (2005) and the 20-Year Satyalancana Award from President Joko Widodo (2015). He is actively engaged in research on the arts using a cultural studies approach. His most recent research, conducted in 2024, was titled Monumentalism in Balinese Performing Arts (as a team member).

Several of his academic writings and articles have been published in nationally accredited journals, including Kalangwan (ISI Denpasar), JOMSTI (ISI Bali), and Dewa Ruci (ISI Surakarta).

I Kadek Agus Cahaya Suputra, S.Sn., M.Sn

I Kadek Agus Cahaya Suputra, S.Sn., M.Sn., was born in Ubud on August 16, 1995. He is a lecturer who began teaching at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar in 2024, which is now known as ISI Bali. He completed his Master’s degree (S2) in Arts with a concentration in Art Studies at ISI Denpasar in 2020. Although a permanent lecturer in the Karawitan Art Study Program, he has also taught across faculties at ISI Bali. He has actively participated in various musical performances as part of the Gamelan Yuganada ensemble, including Samudra Murti (2022), Nyapuh Tirah Campuhan (2022), Sudamala in Jakarta (2022), Cosmopolis Festival (2022), Taksu Production in Malaysia (2019), Armour and Skin Production in Malaysia (2019), Chingay Parade in Singapore (2016), Ramayana Festival in India (2015), Bali Arts Festival, and Best of IBM Music Production (2011–2018).

Drs. I Ketut Muryana, M.Si

Drs. I Ketut Muryana, M.Si., was born in Banjar Mukti, Singapadu, Gianyar, in 1961. He graduated from SMKI Denpasar in 1980, earned his Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from Udayana University in 1986, and completed his Master’s degree in Cultural Studies at the same university in 2006. Since 1989, he has been a lecturer at STSI Denpasar, which later became ISI Denpasar, teaching across various study programs such as Karawitan, Photography, Dance, Puppetry, Music, and Performing Arts. He has actively conducted research on a wide range of cultural and artistic topics, including sculpture artisans in Singapadu (1993), the function of the Topeng Rangda mask (1994), ancient Balinese performing arts (1996), Chinese cultural acculturation in Balinese arts (2000), Gamelan Gong Kebyar (2010), the works of I Wayan Jebeg (2011), and the existence of Gamelan Luang in Singapadu (2018). Most of his research has been supported by institutional and governmental funding. His works have contributed significantly to the preservation and development of traditional Balinese arts through both academic approaches and hands-on field practice.

I Made Dwi Andika Putra, S.Sn., M.Sn

I Made Dwi Andika Putra, S.Sn., M.Sn., earned his Master of Arts (S2) degree from the Postgraduate Program of the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar in 2016. He currently serves as a lecturer in the Karawitan Art Study Program, specializing in Karawitan composition.

He has received several awards, including the Adhyapaka Nata Kerti Nugraha in 2023 and 2024. Actively working as a composer, musician, and Karawitan art judge at local, national, and international levels, Andika also writes academic works published in both national and international journals, such as Abdi Widya: Journal of Community Service, Dance & Theatre Review, and the International Journal of Visual and Performing Arts.

Ni Putu Hartini,S.Sn.,M.Sn

Ni Putu Hartini was born in Denpasar on April 29, 1985. She earned her Master of Arts degree (S2) in Art Studies from the Postgraduate Program of the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar, specializing in Karawitan studies.

Hartini has received recognition as a musician, judge, mentor, and speaker in the field of Karawitan arts. Her research experience includes field studies and the creation of Balinese Karawitan works that integrate traditional and innovative elements. In addition, she has authored numerous scholarly articles published in both national and internationally indexed journals, such as Kalangwan, Mudra, Tamumatra, JOMSTI, Ghurnita, Abdi Seni, International Journal of Visual & Performing Arts, Abdi Widya, Widyanatya, Lekesan, and the eProceeding ISI Bali, exploring technical, cultural, and theological aspects of Balinese Karawitan.

Saptono, S.Sen., M.Si

Saptono, S.Sen., M.Si., was born in Sumpiuh, Banyumas, on June 11, 1964. He earned his Master’s degree (S2) in Cultural Studies from Udayana University. Since 1992, he has served as a lecturer in the Karawitan Art Study Program, Faculty of Performing Arts, ISI Bali, specializing in Indonesian traditional music, particularly Javanese Karawitan. For his dedication, he received the Satyalancana Karya Satya XXX Tahun Honorary Medal from the President of the Republic of Indonesia. He has been actively involved in various research projects, including the development of a ten-tone gamelan prototype (2014), the Padmanaba gending model (2017), the creation of Karawitan compositions for the dance Bedhaya Kroda Putri Cina (2018), and studies on Balinese Karawitan artists and gamelan traditions (2022–2024). He is also a prolific author of scholarly works, including books and national journals focusing on Balinese Karawitan, gamelan fusion, and Indonesia’s traditional musical culture, with his most recent work Calung Banyumasan published in 2025. His contributions reflect a deep commitment to preserving and advancing the performing arts of the Indonesian archipelago.

I Gede Putu Resky Gita Adhi Pratista, S.Sn.,M.Sn

Born in Tabanan on November 4, 1996, he is a lecturer in the Karawitan Art Study Program at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar and began teaching in 2025. Growing up in an artistic environment in Kerambitan inspired him to pursue a Bachelor’s degree at ISI Denpasar in 2014, followed by a Master’s degree in Art Studies at ISI Denpasar Postgraduate Program (2020), where he graduated with the highest GPA in the category 3 ranking. He actively creates Karawitan compositions using both conventional and experimental approaches, including Solar System, Mitbit (winner of the 4th Best Composer Award at the Taksapala Festival), Windhu Sadhana, Bhur Kobar. He also plays a significant role in performance management, serving as the Head of the Production Team for Gong Kebyar Dewasa Tabanan (2024), and is actively involved in reconstructing traditional gending from Kerambitan. His research focuses on intra-aesthetic studies and issues of artistic existence within society. His works are available on various publication and streaming platforms.

Ni Wayan Masyuni Sujayanthi

Ni Wayan Masyuni Sujayanthi was born in Denpasar on March 21, 1987. She earned her Master’s degree in Law from the Postgraduate Program at Udayana University in 2014, specializing in Legal Studies. Masyuni has been a permanent civil servant lecturer since 2015 in the Karawitan Art Study Program, Faculty of Performing Arts.

She received the Dosen Penggerak (Inspirational Lecturer) Award from the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Bali in both 2023 and 2024. Her research experience includes studies on legal protection of intellectual property rights (copyright) in the field of Karawitan arts.

Masyuni has authored and co-authored academic papers published in nationally and internationally indexed journals, including Mudra, Segara Widya, Lekesan, and Atlantis Press.

Dr. I Ketut Garwa, S.Sn.,M.Sn

Dr. I Ketut Garwa, S.Sn., M.Sn., was born in Banjar Tegal Bebalang on December 31, 1968. He has been a lecturer at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar since 1996, which has since become ISI Bali. He completed his Doctoral Program (S3) in Art Creation at ISI Denpasar in 2021, specializing in Art Creation.

His creative works include Manik Angkeran, Candet Ding, Batur Ulu Pasuwakan, Dang Merdangga, Menteng, Baris Katekok Jago, Rejang Nata Hita ISI Denpasar, Raksan Gumi, Apit Lawang, Sanghyang, and others. In addition to his active artistic practice, he also writes academic papers, such as The Colossal Musical Concept of Ngider Bhuwana: A Transformation of the Ngrebeg Kuningan Ritual in Bangli City, among others.

Dr. I Made Kartawan, S.Sn., M.Si., M.A

Dr. I Made Kartawan, S.Sn., M.Si., M.A., was born in Denpasar on October 10, 1972. He has been a lecturer at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar since 2003. He completed a Master’s degree in Cultural Studies at Udayana University in 2003, followed by a Master’s degree in Ethnomusicology at the University of British Columbia, Canada, and later earned his Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Ethnomusicology from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand. Although a permanent lecturer in the Karawitan Art Study Program, he has also taught across faculties at ISI Bali. Kartawan has received several prestigious awards and fellowships, including the Internship Study Fellowship in the USA from the Bureau of International Cooperation, Ministry of Education and Culture (2007), and the Internship Study Fellowship in Japan under the IMHERE Program (2010), among others.

Dr. I Wayan Suharta, SSKar., M.Si

Dr. I Wayan Suharta, SSKar., M.Si., was born in Ubud on July 30, 1963. He earned his Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Cultural Studies from Udayana University (UNUD) in 2021. He has been a lecturer since 1990 at STSI Denpasar (now ISI Bali), specializing in Karawitan Art and Cultural Studies. His awards include Outstanding Lecturer I at ISI Denpasar (2012) and the Satyalancana Karya Satya XXX Tahun Honorary Medal (2022). His artistic creations include accompaniment compositions for mascot dances such as Dahayuning Gringsing (2022) and Tirtha Mahamreta Pratistha (2023). His research works include The Development of Gamelan Angklung Compositions as Accompaniment for Tourist Performing Arts Packages in Banjar Nyuh Kuning, Desa Mas, Ubud (2016) and The Commodification of Gamelan Selonding in Tenganan Pegringsingan Village, Karangasem (2021). His scholarly publications include “Social Solidarity and Cultural Preservation: The Role of Female Sekaa Gong in Ubud” (Gelar, 2024) and “Resilience of Gamelan Semara Pagulingan Based on Evolutionary Cultural Experience” (ESIC, 2024).

Dr. I Nyoman Kariasa

Dr. I Nyoman Kariasa was born in Banjar Pinda, Saba, Blahbatuh–Gianyar, on March 27, 1973. He completed his Bachelor’s degree (S-1) in Karawitan Art at STSI Denpasar in 1997, followed by a Master’s degree in Artistic Creation at ISI Surakarta (2010–2012). He is currently completing his Doctoral studies at ISI Bali (2018–2025). Throughout his artistic career, he has created numerous karawitan compositions for regional festivals and performed as well as taught Balinese gamelan both across Indonesia and internationally — including in Lampung, Banyuwangi, Lombok, Singapore, Malaysia, the USA, Germany, Switzerland, and France. Currently, he serves as a lecturer and Head of the Karawitan Art Study Program, Faculty of Performing Arts, ISI Denpasar. His notable creative works include Lukat, Karawitan Tari Puspa Mandara, Bleganjur Ang-Ah, Karawitan Tari Rejang, Karawitan Tari Baris, and Komposisi Karawitan Baru ANG-AH, among others. His most recent research (2025) focuses on “Empowering Women through Innovative Performing Arts Based on Local Wisdom to Support Sustainable Tourism in the Digital Era in North Bali.”

Dr. Kadek Suartaya

Dr. Kadek Suartaya earned his Doctorate in Cultural Studies from Udayana University in 2016. Specializing in Karawitan Art, he is also widely recognized as an art critic, with his insightful writings featured in various mass media outlets.

His collections of art criticism have been published in several books, including Panorama Seni Pertunjukan di Media Massa (2006), Pentas Seni Ritus Bali (2007), Bali Nyala Api Seni (2019), and Bali Bianglala Seni (2019).

Throughout his career, Dr. Suartaya has received numerous awards such as Wija Kusuma (2013), Bali Jani Nugraha (2019), and Satyalancana Karya Satya 30 Tahun (2022) for his dedication and contributions to the arts.

Beyond his critical writing, he is also frequently appointed as an Artistic Director for large-scale and collaborative art productions at both regional and national levels, showcasing his ability to merge creative vision with cultural depth.

Putu Tiodore Adi Bawa, S.Sn., M.Sn

Putu Tiodore Adi Bawa, S.Sn., M.Sn., lahir di Denpasar pada 20 April 1987. Ia merupakan dosen pada Program Studi Seni Karawitan, Fakultas Seni Pertunjukan, Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Denpasar—yang kini menjadi ISI Bali—dan mulai aktif mengajar sejak tahun 2020. Ia menyelesaikan pendidikan Magister Seni di ISI Denpasar pada tahun 2014 dengan minat Penciptaan dan Pengkajian Seni. Selain mengajar di bidang karawitan, ia juga berpengalaman memberikan mata kuliah lintas fakultas di ISI Bali. Sebagai seniman karawitan, ia produktif menciptakan karya, di antaranya Hujan Kesanga, Baleganjur Gandawa Ampad, Murdhanata Bali Dwipa Jaya, Tabuh Baleganjur Jabang Tatuka, Tabuh Kreasi Pepanggulan “Ombak Kapitu”, Tabuh Kutus Abdi Budaya, Baleganjur Lingyan, Baleganjur Tegalgundul, dan Karya Putri Cening Ayu. Selain aktif berkarya, ia juga menulis karya ilmiah, salah satunya “Pembinaan Gending Sekatian pada Remaja Putri di Sanggar Sami Semeton, Banjar Lodsema, Desa Lodtunduh, Gianyar”, serta berbagai tulisan lain yang berfokus pada pembinaan generasi muda dalam pelestarian seni karawitan Bali.
